Make your travel data go further

Simple tips for downloads, background activity and keeping track of your allowance.

Start with your own usage

There is no universal daily GB requirement. Video quality, calls over the internet, uploads and hotspot activity change consumption. Use your recent mobile usage and trip length as a starting point, with some spare capacity.

Download before departure

Save maps, music and essential documents over Wi-Fi. Restrict photo backups and app updates to Wi-Fi. Check that your offline map actually covers the area you will visit.

Use data-saving settings

Low Data Mode on iPhone and Data Saver on Android can reduce background activity. Menu names vary by device. Turn off social-media video autoplay and lower streaming resolution. Some background updates may be delayed by these settings.

Keep an eye on the balance

Check usage in your eSIM account. Your phone and the provider may update their counters at different times. Before tethering, confirm the plan supports hotspot; a connected laptop's backups and updates also consume your allowance. Apple Low Data Mode · Google mobile data management
